About the series: Flat and Grippy, Not Steep and Slippy

In May 2020 I spent a day exploring Girraween National Park, near Stanthorpe, Queensland. Sitting on top of Castle Rock at 1112m above sea level, I felt lucky to have my sketch book to keep me busy as I had just discovered that I am unexpectedly afraid of heights. While trying to muster the courage to walk back down I worked on a series of drawings on thick cotton rag paper.  Some pages were pre-painted back in my studio with bold gouache shapes.

The series was named after a catching jingle made up on the day by my boyfriend, which I repeated to help me get back down from the mountain. I was convinced I would slide right off the steep rock faces we had to walk along but in reality I had nothing to fear as they were "flat and grippy not steep and slippy”. Turns out it was all in my mind. Fear is funny like that.
